It’s incredible how much changes in a single year. From tiny newborn snuggles to curious, giggling moments at their first birthday, babies grow and blossom right before our eyes. Capturing these fleeting stages is so important—time moves quickly, but photographs give us a way to hold on to those special moments forever.

Isaac’s first birthday cake smash session was the perfect example of this. Having photographed his parents, Kyle and Steph, on their wedding day, during their maternity journey, and at Isaac’s newborn and 6-month sitter sessions, this milestone felt like the continuation of a beautiful story I’ve been privileged to witness.

From the moment Isaac arrived at the studio, his big personality lit up the room. Getting him dressed in an adorable birthday outfit, he was ready for the big moment—his very first cake smash! The session began with a few portraits to capture his infectious smile and those precious expressions that perfectly reflected his curious, playful nature. Then it was time for the messy fun.

When Isaac saw the delicious cake sitting in front of him, his eyes widened with curiosity. At first, he was hesitant, poking at the icing with tiny fingers. But before long, he was full of giggles, diving in with both hands-pure, messy, wonderful joy. The laughter and delight as he enjoyed the cleanup was so adorable. He loved splashing about in our vintage bathtub-the perfect way to wrap up the session.

Reflecting on the past year, it was amazing to think back to the moments I’ve captured for this family. From Kyle and Steph’s wedding day to Isaac’s newborn session, and now his first birthday, I’ve had the honor of documenting how their love has grown. Each stage of Isaac’s life has been filled with unique, fleeting moments, and this cake smash was no exception.

Isaac’s first year is a reminder of just how quickly time passes. Babies change so much in those 12 short months—from their first coos to their first giggles, from learning to sit to taking their first steps. These milestones deserve to be celebrated and preserved because they’re over in the blink of an eye!
